The Bible contains many prophecies concerning a coming Messiah who would bring salvation to Israel. The Messiah would be born of a virgin in Bethlehem. That He would be a prophet like Moses. That He would come 483 years after the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. That He would have YHWH, God’s own Name applied to Him. That He would be the Son of God. That He would enter into Jerusalem publicly, riding a donkey. That He would be betrayed by a friend for thirty pieces of silver. That He would be forsaken by His disciples. That He would be rejected by the Jewish Religious Leaders. That He would be struck on the cheek, spat on, mocked and brutally beaten. That He would be executed by crucifixion which the Jews did not practice. That He would die without having a single bone broken. That His death would make atonement for the sins of mankind.
Messiah: Hebrew -“Mashiah” Greek -“Christos”, meaning “Anointed One”. Atonement: Meaning “reconciliation” or being made “at-one-ment with God”. Crucifixion: This punishment began by subjecting the sufferer to a horrible beating. After this scourging, the person was nailed to a cross or stake and left to slowly die. It was unanimously considered the most horrible form of death. Among the Romans the degradation was also a part of the infliction, and the punishment if applied to freemen was only used in the case of the vilest criminal The one to be crucified was stripped naked of all his clothes, and then followed the most awful moment of all. He was laid down upon the implement of torture. His arms were stretched along the cross-beams, and at the wrist or hand the point of a huge iron nail was placed, which, by the blow of a mallet, was driven home into the wood. Then through either foot separately, or through both together, as they were placed one over the other, another huge nail tore its way through the quivering flesh. The unnatural position made every movement painful; the lacerated veins and crushed tendons throbbed with incessant anguish; the wounds, inflamed by exposure, gradually gangrened; the arteries, especially of the head and stomach, became swollen and oppressed with surcharged blood; and, while each variety of misery went on gradually increasing, there was added to them the intolerable pang of a burning and raging thirst. CONCLUSION: According to Bible prophecy, who was the Messiah?_____________________
40 prophecies pertaining to the promised Messiah
40 is the number of trial and testing
Truly the prophecies made about Jesus in the Old Testament alone verify His divinity because they verify the Bible’s claims about Him, and His claims about Himself. We see also that the prophecies spoken in advance proclaim that the Bible was inspired directly by God. The Word of God is true and the Bible is His written Word to us.
